Improving Non-verbal communication skills

Improving Non-Verbal Communication

Non- Verbal communication is important of our life. It is necessary to understand the non-verbal signals sent by others. Knowing these signals will help in improving the understanding of other people behaviors. Some of the ways to improve your non- verbal skills are:-
·         Eye contact: If while talking the person does not make eye contact it shows that he/she is not interested. Not making eye contact may also be perceived as you are hiding something. If you do not make eye contact during giving any presentation, it shows you are nervous.
·         Arms and Legs: Crossed arms and legs shows that you are not approachable or not interested in talking. So, if you want to show other people that you are approachable, pay attention to the position of your arms and legs.

·         Tone of Voice: Voice tone is important in communication. It conveys a lot of information ranging from happiness to nervousness to anger. To make sure that others understand what you say, pay attention to your tone of voice. If your voice fumble as you speak it shows nervousness. If you are asking a polite question, but in high pitched voice. The other person may perceive it to be rude. So, make sure that your voice tone matches your words.
·         Improve Emotional Awareness: Emotional awareness is key element in non-verbal communication. Observe other people and understand their emotional behaviour. Show others that you are paying attention to them and understand how they feel. (Cuncic, 2014)
·         Sit Square: It is best to sit and face the person you are talking. If you are sitting adjacent to each other or find yourself in a position that you are not able to see the face expression of the other person clearly and unable to make an eye contact. It is impossible to communicate fully.
·         Practice Observing: Practice observing others non –verbal communication and try to know what the signals indicate. Understanding non-verbal signs is not what you can learn in one day. It needs a lot of practice.
